Professor Department of Biology
Prof. Chen obtained his Ph.D. degree from Max-Panck-Institute for Molecular Genetics in 2006. He was trained in human molecular genetics and bioinformatics. Between 2007 and 2008, he stayed the same institute and led a research group. His group developed one of the first experimental and data analysis pipelines for Illumina/Solexa sequencing. At 2009, he moved to a newly established Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology at Max-Delbrueck-Center for Molecular Medicine, where he led the Lab of Systems Biology and Functional Genomics. At 2016, he returned to China，and now he is chair of Department of Biology, SUSTech.
Wei Chen, chair professor, Department of Biology, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). In 2002-2006, he studied for a PhD in the lab of Professor H.Hilger Ropers, an internationally renowned human medicine geneticist at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, Germany. In late 2006, he was hired as one of the group leaders of the young scientist research groups at the Max Planck Institute after receiving his doctorate. In 2009, he was hired as the director of the Genome Center of the Institute of Medical Systems Biology, Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine, and was responsible for the establishment of one of the largest genome centers in Europe at the time. In 2012-2015, he participated as the main planner in the foundation of the Berlin Institute of Health, Germany's largest center for translational research and precision medicine, supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In 2015, he was appointed as a professor (w3) at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine and Charité Medical School through global recruitment. Since 2007, as a principle investigator, Dr. Wei Chen has published more than 30 papers as a first author or corresponding author, with a total of more than 100 papers. The total number of citations reached 17479, and the H-index reached 56 (October, 2019, based on Google Scholar). In 2009-2015, he led more than 10 research projects from the European Union, the German government and enterprises, with a cumulative funds of more than 7 million euros. In a number of German and European major scientific research projects, he achieved remarkable outcomes, which were highly recognized by international counterparts. In 2016, he returned to China, and join in the Southern University of Science and Technology. The current research group includes 4 research assistant professors, 2 postdoctoral fellows, 3 research assistants, and 7 graduate students.
His lab has been developing various genomics assays based on the novel sequencing technology. The research interest of hid lab is to understand the mechanisms underling post-transcriptional gene regulation and their important role in causing human diseases.

Welcome to the Department of Biology! Since its establishment in 2012, the Department of Biology has attracted internationally renowned professors to join as leaders and dozens of young scientists to start their independent academic career here pursuit of excellence in research and teaching. The research interests of our faculty members include diverse topics such as systems biology, plant biology, neurobiology, structural biology and molecular cell biology. The primary goals of our faculty are to address the most significant fundamental biological questions and to develop new strategies to treat various complex diseases. Such efforts will benefit from the shared inter-disciplinary collaborative spirit deeply rooted in the minds of all the faculty members working in different departments at SUSTech.
Mentoring the next generation biologists with the highest standards is another primary task of the Department of Biology. Our professors choose internationally acclaimed textbooks to teach core courses biological sciences, biotechnology and bioinformatics. Undergraduates are encouraged to join the laboratory early to get firsthand working experience in basic and/or applied biological research, which helps them to consolidate the mastering of basic techniques, to broaden their knowledge horizons and to acquire the capabilities of problem identifying, hypothesis formulating and problem solving.
