Research
Prof. Hisao Ishibuchi is one of the world’s most influential scholars in the field of computational intelligence. His expertise includes evolutionary computation, fuzzy systems, neural networks and their hybrid systems. In his 30 years of research, Prof. Hisao Ishibuchi has established two novel and important research areas of computational intelligence.
Teaching
Advanced Algorithms:
The goal of this course is to learn how to analyze the behavior of heuristic algorithms for combinatorial optimization problems such as load balancing, center selection, set covering, vertex cover, disjoint path, and knapsack problems. For each problem, first a greedy algorithm is explained. Students will learn its basic search mechanism. Next, a theoretical lower bound of its solution quality is mathematically derived. Students will learn how to evaluate the greedy algorithm theoretically. Then students are asked to create easy and difficult problem instances for the greedy algorithm in order to deeply understand its search behavior in various situations.
Advanced Optimization Algorithms:
This course explains a variety of advanced topics on optimization algorithms, which include hyper-heuristics, interactive optimization, memetic algorithms, constraint handling, surrogate models, multi-tasking, transfer optimization, noisy optimization, and multi-objective optimization. The goal of this course is to learn how to design single-objective and multi-objective optimization algorithms for various optimization problems. In addition to this main goal, students will learn how to evaluate and compare different optimization algorithms. By implementing local search for flowshop scheduling and travelling salesperson problems, students will understand the importance of appropriate specifications of parameters and operators. Students will also learn several performance indicators for multi-objective optimization algorithms.
