Research Interests
The Chen group focuses on the "Green and Low-Carbon Resource Recycling and Pollution Control Chemistry of Critical Elements" as its core research direction, focusing on the green and low-carbon resource recycling and pollution control of critical elements in urban industrial, mining solid wastes and its derived waste water and waste gas. We are committed to developing new photochemical, electrochemical and thermochemical conversion processes, technologies and equipment, and deeply study the atomic-scale mechanism characterization technology of bulk and interface transformation during the circulation of key elements. At present, a series of original scientific theories for the circulation and pollution control of key elements has been established in our lab. Furthermore, we also developed new green and efficient low-carbon recovery and pollution control processes, new materials and new equipment for typical elements (such as Rare earth, Li, Ni, Co, Mn, Au, Ag, Pt, Cu, Ga, ge, In, Fe, P, Cl, Na, Mg, Ca, Al, C, etc.). These achievements can be effectively applied to the efficient recovery, removal and pollution control of valuable metals, salt ions and new organic pollutants (such as organic halides, antibiotics, dyes, etc.) in typical industrial solid waste and various decentralized waste water. In future, our research group aims to deeply understand and promote the green circulation and pollution control of key elements in modern industry through the interdisciplinary integration of environment, chemistry, physics, materials, mineralogy, energy and instrument science, starting from the forefront practical needs of environmental science and engineering.
Research
The Chen group at SUSTech focuses on the "Green and Low-Carbon Resource Circularity and Pollution Control Chemistry of Critical Elements," specifically addressing the sustainable recovery and environmental management of critical elements derived from urban industrial and mining solid wastes, as well as their associated wastewater. We are dedicated to developing innovative photo-/electrochemical green and low-carbon processes, technologies, and equipment, while conducting in-depth investigations into atomic-scale characterization techniques to elucidate the bulk and interfacial transformation mechanisms occurring during critical element cycling. To date, the laboratory has established a series of original scientific theories and developed green, high-efficiency recovery processes, materials, and equipment for a broad spectrum of elements, including rare earth elements (Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, etc.), rare-scattered metals (Ga, Ge, In), precious metals (Au, Ag, Pt, Rh, etc), transition metals (Cu, Fe, Ni, Co, Mn, etc), alkali metals (Li, Rb, Cs), and other anions (P, Cl, S, etc) and low-value elements (Na, Mg, Ca, Al, Si, C, etc.). These achievements are effectively applied to the high-efficiency recovery and deep removal of valuable elements and salt ions, as well as the control of emerging organic pollutants (e.g., organohalides, antibiotics, dyes) from typical urban industrial solid wastes (spent batteries, PCBs, LEDs, magnets, catalysts, industrial sludge), mining wastes (metallurgical slag, tailings, red mud, phosphogypsum), and decentralized wastewater. By integrating environmental science, chemistry, physics, materials science, mineralogy, energy, and instrumentation, our group aims to address the frontier demands of Environmental and Metallurgical Engineering to advance the green, low-carbon, electrified, and intelligent transformation of critical element cycling and pollution control in modern industry.
Main Research Interests:
1. Critical element recovery from urban and industrial solid wastes;
2. Selective separation and resource recovery of critical elements from industrial and mining tailings;
3. Resource extraction of critical elements from saline water sources (including salt lakes, industrial brines, and seawater);
4. Advanced seawater desalination and sustainable ocean mining technologies;
5. Integrated pollution control and remediation for soil and contaminated water systems.
