Invitation of Applications for SUSTech-Birmingham Program for Doctoral Candidates

 

The  School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham and The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) with its School of Environmental Science and Engineering in Shenzhen, China jointly invite doctoral candidates (Chinese) in the field of coastal city flooding for applying scholarship from SUSTech- Birmingham join Program and for a duration of four years.

The doctoral candidate will participate in a transdisciplinary research project entitled “Development and applications of key technologies for risk assessment and management associated with climate change catastrophes in Shenzhen”, which is funded by Shenzhen Science and Technological Committee.

 

The overarching goal of the project is to develop resilient adaptation measures to address future increasing flood risk under climate change and rapid socioeconomic development in Shenzhen for the purpose of effectively mitigating the potential devastating consequences of compound events. This comprises event-based urban-scale atmospheric modeling, quantitative risk and uncertainty assessment of compound floods, social-economic evaluation of different mitigation and adaptation strategies, and identification of a sustainable solution.

 

Requirements

  • Both undergraduate and master's GPAs must be 3.0/4 or above for students starting at the master's level, and at least 3.0/4 for students starting at the undergraduate level.  A 3.4/4 GPA is required for students applying to Hong Kong Baptist University from the undergraduate level. 85/100 or equivalent is recommended for students applying to all partner universities from the undergraduate level.
  • Student must meet the English language requirements of the partner university. All English test score reports should be issued within the past two years. If the English language requirement in any particular subject of any partner university is higher than the general requirement, applicants must meet the higher requirement. Above average university degree in natural-science (MSc), preferably in meteorology, hydrology, physical geography, as well as an excellent scientific record
  • previous research experiences in hydrodynamic model construction, storm surge simulation and programming, machine learning, robust decision-making modeling experience (one or more);
  • Competent with FORTRAN and either Python or R; good knowledge of UNIX/Linux including scripting; ability to work with high-performance computing systems
  • Self-reliant and responsible working style, flexibility and the capacity of team work
  • Pleasure and commitment to an international orientation of research (China)

Additional Information:

  • The PhD candidate will jointly trained by University of Birmingham, and SUSTech and will get PhD degree from University of Birmingham after successful defense.
  • The PhD candidate will conduct the research firs 1 and last 0.5 year at University of Birmingham UK. Research stays at SUSTech China are in the middle 2.5 years within the project.
  • The living cost will be covered by SUSTech for 4 years and the research related cost will be covered by the project.
