The Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) at Southern University of Science and Technology was established in December 2016. Prof. Xiaofei Chen, a renowned seismologist and an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is appointed as an initiatory departmental head. 

The studies in ESS concern the physics of the Earth, geo-space and planets in outer space. Through building up a world-leading program of research and education in Earth and Space Sciences, we strive to conduct the research that would advance our understanding on the complex natural system of Earth and Space, in order to provide science-based solutions to many of the societal challenges of our time: natural hazards, natural energy resources, space exploration, etc. In the meantime, our department offers rigorous hands-on training to students and prepares them to be future leaders in academia, government and industry. 

ESS encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines: Geophysics, Space Physics, Satellite Geodesy and Planetary Science. By the end of October 2019, ESS has thirty-one faculty members, including six professors, four associate professors, eleven assistant professors, and ten research assistant professors, including one Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, three Distinguished Young Scholars of National Nature Science Fund, one Excellent Young Scientists of National Science Fund. elcome more talents to join us and work together to build a world-class research and education center for Earth and Space Sciences.

The candidate is expected to

1)Have a Ph.D. in space physics/planetary science (or a closely related field) by the start of the employment.

2)Have a sense of responsibility and teamwork spirit, and is able to think and carry out scientific research independently.

3)Be fluent in written and oral English communications.

4)Have published one or more academic papers in mainstream journals in related fields as the first author.

2)Communicate and coordinate with collaborating parties.

3)Apply for research funding.

4)Present research results at seminars and conferences.

5)Prepare manuscripts for publication at scientific peer reviewed journals.

6)Supervise junior members of the team.


  • Remuneration

1)A postdoctoral scholar is a formal staff member of our university during the employment, who can enjoy benefits like insurance, medical coverage, and childcare service.

2)The position is for two years with the possibility of an extension based on performance and funding availability. The salary is typically 335,000 RMB/Year (including subsidies available after proposal), particularly outstanding candidates can apply for outstanding postdoctoral fellows, and the annual salary can reach 415,000 RMB/Year.

3)The university will provide each postdoctoral scholar with an academic exchange subsidy of 25,000 RMB (including international conference subsidy)

4)The research group provides good scientific research conditions, encourages and assists postdoctoral researchers to apply for the National Natural Science Foundation of China, China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, Guangdong Postdoctoral Research Funding Projects, etc., and recommends those who excel in outbound assessments for research faculty positions in the university.
