He is currently the director of the Shenzhen Municipal Solid Waste Recycling Technology and Management Key Laboratory and the deputy director of the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Soil and Groundwater Rehabilitation. He has achieved certain results in the field of efficient and effective cleaning of solid waste. In the past five years, Professor Zhang has hosted more than 10 national, provincial and ministerial research projects including the Outstanding Youth Fund of the Natural Science Foundation, the National Key R&D Program, and the Shenzhen Discipline. In the past five years, he has published more than 80 SCI articles in internationally renowned journals such as Appl. Cat. B: Environ., Appl Energy., ACS Sustain. Chem.& Eng., Waste. Manag., J. Hazard. Mater. There are more than 20 national invention patents, and there are a number of patents to realize technology transfer. Professor Zhang was invited to give a report at the international conference more than 10 times and served as the chairman of the club for many times. He was also invited as the deputy editor of the Journal of Cleaner Production, the Youth Editor of China Science: Technical Science, Keyreader of Metall. Mater. Trans., and Professor Zhang also served as the vice chairman of the China Silicate Society Solid Waste Branch. He has won the second prize of Guangdong Environmental Association, the first prize of China Circular Economy Association, the second prize of Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, and the best paper award of TMS conference in the United States.
Zuotai Zhang, PhD of Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, currently holds the position of Professor of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), and the Deputy Director of Technology Transfer Center of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Before he joined SUSTech, he was an associate professor of the Department of Energy and Resources Engineering at Peking University. Dr. Zhang’s research interest mainly focuses on utilization of industrial and municipal solid waste. His research has been supported by more than 14 nation-level grants, such as National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and around 30 conference papers, and applied 23 patents. Dr. Zhang also serves as board of review members for Metall. Mater. Trans. A, B and E, AIST Trans and J. Innovative Engineering, and serves as Vice-Chair of Asian Coal Ash Association and Solid Waste Subcommittee of Chinese Ceramic Society of China.

(1) Research on efficient and clean utilization and pollution prevention and control of urban solid waste: efficient and clean utilization of municipal sludge, waste incineration bottom slag and fly ash; co-disposal and utilization of municipal waste and solid waste.
(II) Research on the transformation and prevention of harmful pollution in the comprehensive utilization of solid waste: research on the migration and transformation of harmful elements in the comprehensive utilization of urban solid waste and industrial solid waste; research on pollution prevention and control of harmful elements.
(III) Research on comprehensive utilization policy of solid waste: research on solid waste comprehensive utilization standard system, regional circular economy development plan; energy saving and emission reduction technology policy analysis of high energy consumption and heavy pollution industry.
(IV) Metallurgical slag valuable element/recovery heat synergy utilization basic research: mainly involves the research on the synergistic utilization of valuable elements such as hot blast furnace slag, hot steel slag and hot non-ferrous metal smelting slag containing valence metal and waste heat.
(V) Research on efficient and clean utilization of typical energy solid waste: It mainly involves the research on efficient and clean utilization of coal gangue and coal-fired thermal power fly ash in coal mining and washing process.
