Professor Zhang jointed SUSTech in 2017. He received his B.S. (1999) and Ph.D. (2006) in geophysics from the Peking University. He was a postdoc in Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) at University of Rhode Island (URI) from 2007 to 2010, then worked as a senior scientist in GeoTomo LLC from 2010 to 2013, and as a professor in School of Earth and Space Sciences at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) from 2013 to 2017.He is a member of SEG, EAGE, AGU, and the SEG China Advisory Committee. Professor Zhang’s research interests include seismic wave forward modeling and inversion algorithm, strong ground motion, earth interior structure, and microseismic monitoring, etc. He has authored or co-authored more than 30 technical papers in the academic journals, such as Geophysics and Geophysical Journal International, and more than 20 conference papers in SEG/EAGE conferences.

Teaching

Applied Geophysics I (Seismic Exploration)

This course introduces the fundamental theory of seismic exploration, data processing and interpretation methods, to help students have a sound foundation for work in oil industry or developing new methods. is now taught to senior undergraduates.

Fundamentals of Geophysics I (Seismology)

This course mainly introduces the theory of seismic wave propagation in the Earth media, and the basic methods of studying the internal structure of the Earth using seismic waves. It also introduces seismic surface wave and Earth oscillation, earthquake and source theory, earthquake prediction, instruments, etc. is now taught to senior undergraduates.

Geophysical Experiments

This course involves short lectures and laboratory work, to let students master operations of different geophysical instruments and basic data processing and analysis approaches of different geophysical methods.

Projects of Science and Technology Innovation

Science and technology innovation projects provide excellent opportunities for students to participate in scientific research activities, subject competitions, science and technology innovation projects, social practices, summer exchange activities, etc., for the purpose to improve students innovation ability. is now taught to senior undergraduates.

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) at Southern University of Science and Technology was established in December 2016. Prof. Xiaofei Chen, a renowned seismologist and an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is appointed as an initiatory departmental head. 

The studies in ESS concern the physics of the Earth, geo-space and planets in outer space. Through building up a world-leading program of research and education in Earth and Space Sciences, we strive to conduct the research that would advance our understanding on the complex natural system of Earth and Space, in order to provide science-based solutions to many of the societal challenges of our time: natural hazards, natural energy resources, space exploration, etc. In the meantime, our department offers rigorous hands-on training to students and prepares them to be future leaders in academia, government and industry. 

ESS encompasses a wide range of scientific disciplines: Geophysics, Space Physics, Satellite Geodesy and Planetary Science. By the end of October 2019, ESS has thirty-one faculty members, including six professors, four associate professors, eleven assistant professors, and ten research assistant professors, including one Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, three Distinguished Young Scholars of National Nature Science Fund, one Excellent Young Scientists of National Science Fund. elcome more talents to join us and work together to build a world-class research and education center for Earth and Space Sciences.
