Biography

Dr. YANG Liang obtained his BSc degree from Nankai University in 2004 (Tianjin, China) and PhD degree from Technical University of Denmark in 2009. After which, he did postdoc training in Technical University of Denmark and University of Hamburg (Germany) from 2010 to 2011. Dr. Yang joined Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore) as an Assistant Professor in 2012 and was promoted as an Associated Professor (with tenure) in Feb 2018. Dr. Yang was appointed as the Assistant Chair in the School of Biological Sciences and the Deputy Research Director of the Public Health Cluster in Singapore Centre for Environment Life Science Engineering (SCELSE) in NTU. In the end of 2018, Dr. Yang joined SUSTec as a Full Professor in School of Medicine.

Dr. Yang’s research group employs molecular microbiology, systems biology and chemical biology approaches to investigate bacterial biofilm formation mechanisms, antibiotic resistance, pathogenesis and next generation antimicrobial compounds. His group has developed the Pulse SILAC proteomics approach for investigating biofilm resistance mechanisms (Nature Communications 2016. 7:10750) and demonstrated that biofilm dispersed cells have distinct physiology compared to both biofilm and planktonic cells (Nature Communications 2014. 5: 4462). He initiated the NGS characterization of the EHEC O104:H4 outbreak strain in Hamburg, Germany, 2011 (The New England Journal of Medicine, 2011. 365: 718-724) and discovered that Elizabethkingia anophelis, a mosquito gut commensal bacterium,  is able to cause deathly hospital outbreak (Lancet, 2013. 382: 855-856).

Dr. Yang received the Alexander von Humboldt fellowship from Germany in 2011 and the Nanyang Assistant Professorship from Singapore in 2012. He is currently an editor board member of Applied and Environmental Microbiology (ASM) and Biofilm (ELSEVIER). He has published more than 140 research papers in international peer reviewed journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Nature Communications, Science Signaling, Nature Protocols, Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A, Trends in Microbiology, mBio, Nano Letters, Current Opinion in Biotechnology, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, etc (Total citations >8000, H-index 43). Dr. Yang has been invited to give talks at international conferences organized by academic societies such as American Society of Microbiology, the Royal College of Pathologists, etc.
