Professor School of Sciences

Dr. Shengtao Hou is a Professor of Neurobiology. He is the Founding Director for SUSTech Brain Research Center, Executive Director for SUSTech Institute of Neuroscience. He is also the Deputy Chair for the Department of Biology and Founding Director for SUSTech Global Engagement Office. He received his doctoral degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Glasgow in 1991. After completing his postdoctoral trainings at King’s College London (1991-1993) and the Department of Biochemistry, University of Bristol (1993-1996), Dr. Hou was recruited by the National Research Council of Canada as an Assistant Research Officer in May 1996. Since then, Dr Hou has risen to the rank of Group leader, Senior Research Officer (tenured position, since 2005). He is also an Adjunct full Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, Immunology and Microbiology of the University of Ottawa (since 2002) to train doctoral and postdoctoral students. Professor Hou’s research is focused on identifying novel molecular targets in the complex cascade of post stroke brain and developing novel experimental strategies and drugs relevant to clinical therapeutics.

Welcome to the Department of Biology! Since its establishment in 2012, the Department of Biology has attracted internationally renowned professors to join as leaders and dozens of young scientists to start their independent academic career here pursuit of excellence in research and teaching. The research interests of our faculty members include diverse topics such as cell biology, neuro biology, plant biology & food safety, bioinformatics, systems biology, structural biology and biophysics. The primary goals of our faculty are to address the most significant fundamental biological questions and to develop new strategies to treat various complex diseases. Such efforts will benefit from the shared inter-disciplinary collaborative spirit deeply rooted in the minds of all the faculty members working in different departments at SUSTech.

 

Mentoring the next generation biologists with the highest standards is another primary task of the Department of Biology. Our professors choose internationally acclaimed textbooks to teach core courses biological sciences, biotechnology and bioinformatics. Undergraduates are encouraged to join the laboratory early to get firsthand working experience in basic and/or applied biological research, which helps them to consolidate the mastering of basic techniques, to broaden their knowledge horizons and to acquire the capabilities of problem identifying, hypothesis formulating and problem solving.
