Chair Professor Department of Ocean Science and Engineering

Dr. Chen is currently a Chair Professor at the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China. Dr. Chen obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at University of Edinburgh, UK in 1996. Dr. Chen has research interests in advanced construction materials such as ultra-high performance concrete and geopolymer concrete, broad areas in structural engineering in particular the use of FRP in civil engineering, research and application of advanced discrete element and finite element method, mechanics of unconsolidated material, and particulate solids flow and stresses in silos and materials handling. To date, Dr. Chen has authored or co-authored over 300 publications. His work has been widely cited. Based on Web of Science, Dr. Chen's work have been cited over 4212 times, with an h-index of 30. According to an Elsevier research conducted for Academic Ranking of World Universities, he was one of the 150 Most Cited Researchers worldwide in Civil Engineering in 2016.

His work has been widely cited. Based on Web of Science, Dr. Chen's work have been cited over 4212 times, with an h-index of 30. According to an Elsevier research conducted for Academic Ranking of World Universities, he was one of the 150 Most Cited Researchers worldwide in Civil Engineering in 2016. The citation count of his published papers was high-ranked in related journals, for instance two papers with high impact, which are “Anchorage Strength Models for FRP and Steel Plates Bonded to Concrete” published in “Journal of Structural Engineering” of ASCE in 2001, with the citation of 597 in WoS, and “Assessment of rolling resistance models in discrete element simulations” published in “Powder Technology” in 2011 with cited times of 256 in WoS. “FRP Strengthened RC Structures”, a book that represents the first book ever in the world to provide a scientific and comprehensive treatment of the behavior and design of FRP strengthened concrete structures, was co-authored by Prof. Chen has been published by Wiley in 2002. The book has been very well received internationally and is now almost universally cited as a main source by researchers, with 364 SCI citations to date.

Applicants must have earned a master or doctoral degree in civil and ocean engineering, mechanics, mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering or closely related fields.
