Research Associate Scientist Department of Biomedical Engineering
Dr. Quanying Liu, joined Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in September 2019, as an Assistant Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Doctoral Supervisor, PI of Neural Computing and Control Laboratory (NCC lab). Before joining SUSTech, Quanying obtained her PhD degree from ETH Zurich and received postdoctoral training at Caltech.
Quanying’s research focuses on interactions among neuroscience, machine learning and control theory, including multi-modal neural signal processing (EEG, sEEG, fMRI, DTI), AI for neuroscience (explainable AI to interpret the structure and function of the brain), optimization for neuromodulation (tES, TMS, electrical stimulation).
Quanying has published over 50 research articles in top journals/conferences such as PNAS, Neuroimage, Neural Networks, Neurocomputing, HBM, JNE, IJNS, JBHI. Her work has been cited more than 1400 times, with an H factor of 19. She is the associate editor of IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine (JTEHM).

In the past five years, Dr. Quan-Ying Liu has published over 40 SCI/EI academic papers as the first author or corresponding author in the interdisciplinary fields of brain science, artificial intelligence, and control. These publications include renowned international journals such as The Innovation, Neuroimage, Pattern Recognition, IEEE Transactions, as well as top machine learning and control conferences like NeurIPS, IJCAI, and ACC. She is also the translator of the book “Computational Modeling of Cognition and Behavior.”
According to Google Scholar, her work has been cited over 2000 times, and she has an H-index of 23. She has applied for 12 patents.
Dr. Liu serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE journal IEEE J TRANSL ENG HE, a member of the Computational Neuroscience Committee of the Chinese Neuroscience Society, a director of the Neuromodulation Branch of the Chinese Neuroscience Society, a member of the Brain-Machine Integration and Biological Machine Intelligence Committee of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, a young committee member of the Medical Artificial Intelligence Committee of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, and the secretary of the Next Generation Artificial Intelligence Committee of the Shenzhen Electronic Society.
At Southern University of Science and Technology, Dr. Liu teaches courses such as “Machine Learning and Medical Engineering Applications” and “Human Brain Intelligence and Machine Intelligence.”
